A half-mask respirator with combined A2 P3 filters covers the two airborne hazards on a resin floor job: fine silica dust from grinding concrete, stopped by the P3 particle filter, and organic vapour from resins and solvents, taken by the A2 gas filter. Paired with dust extraction at the grinder, it is basic protection, not an extra.

Grinding concrete makes respirable crystalline silica. Epoxy hardeners give off amine vapour. They are different hazards needing different protection, and both are present on every job we do.

A silicone half-mask with A2 P3 cartridges covers both (the P3 stage for dust at the grind, the A2 stage for solvent and amine vapour at the pour), with sealed goggles rather than open safety glasses.

Why it is on your page and not just in our office

Because it is priced in, and because a quote that leaves it out is cheaper for a reason. Extraction, cartridges and the time to work in a mask are all real costs, and they are the easiest costs to make disappear from a number on a page.

It also affects you directly: silica dust that is not caught at the head goes through your building, into your stock and onto your staff two bays over.

Silicone, not rubber

A silicone face seal can be worn for a full shift in heat without the crew taking it off to get a breath. A mask that gets taken off is not protection, and the cheap ones get taken off.

What to ask

Ask what happens to the dust. Not whether there is a vacuum, but what class it is, and whether it ducts to the grinder head or stands in the corner.

Questions people ask

Do you need a respirator when grinding concrete?

Yes. Grinding concrete releases respirable crystalline silica, which is fine enough to reach deep into the lungs, and long exposure causes silicosis. A P3 particle filter, used together with a vacuum extractor connected at the grinder head, is the normal standard of protection.

What respirator filter is used for epoxy fumes?

An A-type filter, for organic vapours, is the usual choice, combined with a particle stage wherever there is dust. Many flooring epoxies give off little vapour, but some contain solvents, and the product’s safety data sheet states the protection it needs. The data sheet, not habit, should decide the filter.

Is grinding dust from a floor job a risk to other people in the building?

It can be. Dust that is not caught at the grinder spreads through the space and settles on stock, equipment and people working nearby. On an occupied site, extraction at the tool, sealed-off work areas and cleaning with a vacuum rather than a broom keep it contained.
